Skill of making

What is art, before it is fine art? Art in the older sense is the skill of making: a reasoned capacity to bring something into being. These readings ask what the maker must know and where the form of the work comes from.

Book VI, chapter 4 of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics, in the treatment of the intellectual virtues. He defines “art” (techne) as “a reasoned state of capacity to make”, concerned with “coming into being”, and uses architecture as the example. The Ethics was the chief ethical text of the scholastics. It sits under this term as the classical definition.

Book VII, chapter 7 of Aristotle’s Metaphysics, in the discussion of “substance” and how things come to be. He takes the physician’s reasoning as the example of production by “art”, which proceeds from the “form” in the mind to a first step the maker can perform. The passage is often cited for the doctrine that art is a making from a form. It sits under this term as the account of how the work is produced.

The Summa Theologica, First Part of the Second Part, question 57, article 3, in the treatise on the habits, asking whether “art” is an intellectual virtue. Aquinas gives the definition “right reason about certain works to be made”, and calls art “an operative habit”. The definition draws on Aristotle’s Ethics VI. It sits under this term as the scholastic definition.
