Ascent to first principles

Can the mind climb from opinion to first principles? Ascent is the movement of thought from the senses toward the highest cause of things. These readings ask whether dialectic is the way up.

In Book VII of Plato’s Republic, Socrates tells Glaucon that they have reached “the hymn of dialectic”, which proceeds “by the light of reason only” to “the absolute”. It follows the image of the cave and the account of the studies that prepare for dialectic. The passage stands under the ascent to first principles for its figure of the discovery of “the absolute” by reason alone.

In the treatise on dialectic, Enneads I.3, section 5, Plotinus asks whence “this science” derives its proper principles, and answers that “Intelligence” furnishes the soul with them. He cites Plato for dialectic as “the purest application of intelligence and wisdom”. The treatise is the principal Neoplatonic account of the art, and it stands under the ascent to first principles for that account.
