Commentaria in Scripturam Sacram, Vol. 11: Prolegomena (prefaces and canons)
Ezechiel
I. Chap. iii, ver. 8. “Behold I have made thy face stronger than their faces, and thy forehead harder than their foreheads. I have made thy face like an adamant and like flint.
II. Ver. 17. “Son of man, I have made thee a watchman to the house of Israel. If, when I say to the wicked: Thou shalt surely die, and he live: the wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at thy hand.” … “shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the Lord’s fury.”
IV. Chap. xii, ver. 22. “Son of man, what is this proverb among you in the land of Israel, saying: The days shall be prolonged, and every vision shall fail?” as if to say: The threats of the Prophets are deferred, and in fact are fulfilled; therefore they will perish, and were empty and vanishing. “Therefore say to them: I will make this proverb to cease: For there shall be no more any vain vision, nor ambiguous divination: whatsoever word I shall speak shall be fulfilled, and shall be no more prolonged.”
V. Chap. xiv, ver. 14. “If these three men shall be in the midst of it (Jerusalem), Noe, Daniel, and Job: they shall deliver their own souls by their justice, etc. but neither sons nor daughters shall they deliver.”
VI. Chap. xvi, ver. 3. “Thy father was an Amorrhite,” so impious that thou seemest to be not the child of Abraham, but of the Amorrhites and Cethites.
VII. Ver. 49. “Behold this was the iniquity of Sodom thy sister, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance, and the idleness of her and of her daughters: and they did not put forth their hand to the needy and the poor.”
VIII. Chap. xviii, ver. 2. “What is the meaning that you use among you this parable as a proverb in the land of Israel, saying: The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the teeth of the children are set on edge?” as if to say: Our fathers have sinned, and we pay for their sins, and are punished for them. To this God answers: “As I live, saith the Lord God, this parable shall be no more to you a proverb in Israel. Behold all souls are mine: the soul that sinneth, the same shall die: the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, and the father shall not bear the iniquity of the son: the justice of the just shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.”
IX. Ver. 22. “But if the wicked do penance, etc. I will not remember all his iniquities that he hath done.”
Ver. 24. “But if the just man turn himself away from his justice, and do iniquity, etc. all his justices which he had done shall not be remembered.”
X. Ver. 31. “Why will you die, O house of Israel? For I desire not the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God, return ye and live.”
XI. Chap. xxi, ver. 9. “A sword, a sword is sharpened and furbished, that it may kill victims, it is sharpened: that it may glitter, it is furbished.”
Ver. 16. “Sharpen thyself, go to the right, or to the left, whithersoever the desire of thy face is.”
Ver. 28. “The sword, the sword is drawn for the slaughter, it is furbished that it may kill and glitter.”
XII. Chap. xxii, ver. 18. “Son of man, the house of Israel is become dross to me: all these are brass, and tin, and iron, and lead in the midst of the furnace: they are become the dross of silver. Therefore behold I will gather you into the midst of Jerusalem, and … unclean, and not rained upon in the day of wrath. A conspiracy of the prophets is in the midst thereof, like a roaring lion catching the prey, they have devoured souls, they have taken riches and reward. They have made many widows in the midst thereof.” “Her princes in the midst thereof are like wolves ravening the prey.”
XIV. Ver. 30. “And I sought among them for a man that might set up a hedge, and stand in the gap before me in favour of the land, that I might not destroy it: and I found none.”
XV. Chap. xxxiii, ver. 11. “As I live, saith the Lord God, I desire not the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way, and live.”
XVI. Ver. 32. “And thou (son of man) art to them as a musical song, which is sung with a sweet and pleasant sound: and they hear thy words, and do them not.”
