Commentaria in Scripturam Sacram, Vol. 11: Prolegomena (prefaces and canons)
From Daniel
I. Chap. ix, ver. 25. “From the going forth of the word to build up Jerusalem again, unto Christ the prince, there shall be seven weeks, and sixty-two weeks: after sixty-two weeks (adding the seven already mentioned, that is after 483 years) Christ shall be slain.”
II. Ver. 27. “And he shall confirm the covenant with many in one week (as if to say: Christ will preach and establish the new testament for three years and a half), and in the half of the week the victim and the sacrifice shall fail.” For Christ by his death and sacrifice will abolish all the victims of the Jews.
III. “And there shall be in the temple the abomination of desolation: and the desolation shall continue even to the consummation and to the end,” as if to say: After, and on account of, the slaying of Christ, Jerusalem and its temple will be made desolate by Titus and the Romans, and this desolation will last to the end of the world.
IV. Chap. xi, ver. 5. “And the king of the south shall be strengthened, etc., and after the end of years they shall be in league: and the daughter of the king of the south shall come to the king of the north to make friendship, etc.” Daniel in this whole chapter, as far as ver. 36, recounts the wars waged for 140 years between the kings of the south, that is of Egypt, and the kings of the north, that is of Syria; namely between the Ptolemies and the Seleucidae, or Antiochi: see what is said on Daniel xi.
This whole chapter therefore is a continuous enigma.
V. Ver. 37. “He shall not regard the God of his fathers (the king of the north, namely: not so much Antiochus Epiphanes, as Antichrist, of whom the former was a type and forerunner), and he shall follow the lusts of women, and shall make no account of any god; because he shall rise up against all things. But he shall worship the god Maozim (that is of strength) in his place.”
VI. Ver. 45. “And he shall pitch his tabernacle in Apadno between the seas, upon a glorious and holy mountain: and he shall come up even to the top thereof, and Antichrist shall be slain by the holy one.
VII. Chap. xii, ver. 6. “How long shall be the end of these wonders? And I heard the man that was clothed in linen, who stood upon the waters of the river, when he had lifted up his right hand and his left unto heaven, and swore by him that liveth for ever, that it should be for a time, a time, and times, and half a time,” namely for three years and a half the persecution of Antichrist will last. Hence he adds:
VIII. Ver. 11. “And from the time when the continual sacrifice shall be taken away (by Antichrist), and the abomination unto desolation shall be set up, the persecution of Antichrist will last 1290 days, that is three years and a half.
IX. “Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh unto a thousand three hundred thirty-five days,” for after the death of Antichrist there will be given to the faithful who fell under him at least 45 days for penance.
… (to the death which is appointed and fixed for all:) and thou shalt rest, and shalt stand in thy lot (among the elect and blessed) unto the end of the days, on the day of judgment.
