Didascalicon, Book VI: how Scripture is to be read
Chapter I. How sacred Scripture is to be read by those who seek knowledge in it
Two things, reader, I set before you: order, namely, and manner; which, if you look into them diligently, the way of reading will easily lie open to you. In the consideration of these I will neither leave all to your talent, nor promise that you will be satisfied by my diligence; but I will so run through certain things, tasting briefly, that you may find both some things set down by which you may be instructed and some things passed over by which you may be exercised. The order of reading I have mentioned above to be fourfold: one in the disciplines, another in books, another in narration, and another in exposition. How these are to be assigned in divine Scripture I have not yet shown.
