Didascalicon, Book VI: how Scripture is to be read

Chapter XIII. On meditation, why it is now to be passed over

Behold, what pertains to reading has now been explained, as lucidly and compendiously as we could. Of the remaining part of doctrine, that is meditation, I omit to say anything at present, because so great a matter needs a special treatise; and it is more worthy to be altogether silent in such a matter than to say something imperfectly. For it is a very subtle matter and exercises the consummate, still untried by the pen, and therefore to be pursued more fully. Let us ask wisdom now, that she deign to shine in our hearts and to enlighten us in her paths, that she may lead us in to the pure feast, without animals.
