Didascalicon, Book VI: how Scripture is to be read
Chapter VII. On the order of narration
On the order of narration this is chiefly to be considered in this place: that the text of the divine page does not always keep either the natural or the continuous order of speaking, because it often puts later things before earlier; as when it has enumerated some things, the discourse suddenly runs back to what is above, as though following in the narration. Often also it connects things that are separated by a long interval as if immediately succeeding each other, so that they seem to have had no space of time between them, those things which it distinguishes by no interval of speech.
