The architect

What must a master builder know, and what makes him the one who directs a work rather than only carries it out?

The opening of Book I of Vitruvius’s De architectura, the one complete treatise on building to come down from antiquity. He begins with the education of the architect, and sets “practice” and “theory” side by side as the two parts of the art. Later writers on the architect, including Vasari, took up these terms.

From Aquinas’s commentary on Aristotle’s Metaphysics, at the opening lecture on Book I. He explains the word “architect” from the Greek and uses it to describe a “chief art”. The comparison is one he draws on again when he speaks of wisdom as ordering.

From Aquinas’s commentary on the First Letter to the Corinthians, at chapter 3, where Paul says, “as a wise architect, I have laid the foundation”. Aquinas explains what an “architect” is and why the apostle calls him “wise”.

From Vasari’s life of Leon Battista Alberti, who wrote on architecture, painting and sculpture. Vasari speaks here of “theory” and “practice”, the two terms Vitruvius had used for the education of the architect.
