The human good

What is the good of a human life, and how can it be known?

The passage comes in Book I of the Nicomachean Ethics, after Aristotle has said that most people name “happiness” as the chief good and differ only on what it is. He proposes to find a “clearer account” by ascertaining the “function” of man, and the Ethics is the founding systematic treatise on the subject in the Western tradition. The question of function is the one this term turns on.
